Explosion in Beirut – August 2020

People were created to be loved.
Things were created to be used .
The reason why  the world is in chaos is because things are being loved and people are being used

Dalai Lama

These words of the Dalai Lama, and taken up by Philippe Nassan, Past President Rotary Club Beirut Baabda, summarize the drama of the situation in Beirut after the explosion that occurred on 4 August 2020 at the port of Beirut.

The explosion dealt a very serious blow to an already severely tried city with over half of the population below the poverty line.

In December 2020 there were already 95 victims and 6,500 injured.

When the tragic event happened, our Club, which already had a well-established relationship with the Rotary Club Beirut Cedars, immediately took action to offer support and collaboration for fundraising aimed at helping the population affected by the explosion.

Our President, Monsignor Pier Francesco Fumagalli, immediately contacted our Governor Roberto Bosia so that a fundraising and sending aid proposal could be extended to the Clubs of District 2041.

It is thus that with great satisfaction we have been able to count on the sharing of this initiative with other clubs in the District, RC Cinisello and Sesto San Giovanni and with the Rotary Foundation Milan for Milan.

The aid program was divided into four main lines:

  • Hunger – hot meals and food to the population
  • Education – reconstruction of schools, provision of books and tablets for distance learning
  • House reconstruction – windows, doors, heating, kitchens, electricity
  • Health – reconstruction of hospitals and supply of medicines

The transparency of each action was guaranteed by a system that allowed the immediate traceability of each action performed or material delivered.

The joint action of all of us, including the help we received from our young Rotaract friends, has enabled us to achieve important milestones in our battle
